It’s easy to get lost in the thicket in the testimony, but the larger point is that Chase has a customer who is happy to pay the debt, who has made overtures to do so and has been rebuffed by a system of “massive cogs, massive wheels” – to use the words of the Hauglands’ lawyer, Troy Doucet.

“If they weren’t a gigantic institution,” Doucet argued to the magistrate, “if we were just talking about a local credit union, where you’ve got an individual person sitting down at a desk, . . . we wouldn’t even be here today.”
